Defence Safety Conference 2019

THIS EVENT IS NOW AT CAPACITY AND WE ARE UNABLE TO TAKE ANY MORE REGISTRATIONS

SAE Media Group is delighted to announce, the 2nd annual Defence Safety conference will convene in London on the 7th and 8th October 2019.

The aim of the conference is to review the safe delivery of defence capabilities and the parts that operational users, equipment and service delivery organisations and research and development play in defence safety. It will identify good practice to be learned from and inform the views of those who procure, provide and operate Defence equipment and services.

Last year's conference hosted 250 attendees from 18 nations and contributions ranged from the Vice Chief of Defence Staff to Chief Executives of Industry, as well as international operational leaders and military safety experts.

The 2019 Defence Safety Conference will feature briefings from across the air land and maritime domain, as well as from defence leaders from industry and policy makers.

As the only dedicated event dedicated to defence safety, this conference is the global meeting point for the military community.

The well-being of civilian employees and military members is of primary concern in the execution of every operational, technical, and administrative task.
    • The OHSMS, based on ISO:45001, will aid the DND/CAF in providing a safe and healthy work environment, preventing work-related injury and illness, and working towards continuously improving its OHS performance.
    • Challenges and opportunities that need to addressed as well as finding common ground among 15 Functional Safety Programs and 21 Organizations and Commands include:
    o OHS Leadership commitments and policy; clear organizational roles, responsibilities and authorities; standards for the consultation; and participation of Employees (Bargaining Agents) and military members;
    o Planning the management system through hazard identification and assessment of risk and opportunities, establishing compliance obligations, OHS objectives, and associated performance indicators;
    o Establishing Support through resources, defined competencies of employees and military members, OHS communication efforts, and governed OHS documentations;
    o Developing and implementing Operational controls to eliminate and reduce OHS risks, management of both change and procurement, and standards for emergency preparedness and response;
    o Evaluating Performance through monitoring and measurement, evaluation of compliance, internal audits, and management reviews; and
    o Continual Improvement through identifying incidents, non-conformities, and implementation of corrective actions.

Our teams provide timely and cost-effective safety advice to government agencies, aerospace companies and multinational organisations. Through correct blending of safety, operations and quality management systems, West Keeble has achieved substantial improvements in their clients’ personnel engagement and output confidence. West Keeble’s unique approach is due to its team’s capabilities – by employing regulators, engineers, academics and test pilots, who all have expertise in the development of operating safety cases. With these capabilities, West Keeble can test and assess an organisation’s safety processes, needs and requirements to develop fit-for-purpose operating safety cases and attendant management systems.

    West Keeble has begun working in partnership with CGR, who’s risk and compliance software platform combines quality and simplicity. Used in over 70 countries it enables a picture that is live, collaborative and integrated for the many and not just the few. CGR Foundation allows safety cases to be an ‘aid to thinking’ by surrounding widely accessible bow-tie risk analysis with emerging intelligence from incidents, near misses and compliance assessment. These records connect within a readily accessible framework for claim-argument-evidence aligned to current safety case best practice, allowing focus on thinking rather than format. Active management of the safety case and associated risks is promoted through compellingly live and clear action functionality – ownership, progress and due-date can be immediately assimilated. Records of changes and decisions are instantly available, and digital transfer of the safety case at different lifecycle stages is straightforward - enhancing efficiency and accountability.

    Together, West Keeble and CGR deliver a powerful solution. It combines application of safety understanding with software that delivers a document-light framework, bringing out the connections you need to see. It addresses common safety case pitfalls, by design, focusing thought and collaboration on risk management while avoiding risk admiration. West Keeble and CGR together enable organisations to gain confidence, efficiently, that systems are safely capable - during procurement, entry into service and operational delivery.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
