Brigadier Paul Hughes

 

Brigadier Paul Hughes commissioned into the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineering (REME) in 1992. Following a number of appointments at regimental duty and successful completion of the Officers’ Long Aeronautical Engineering (OLAE) course, he promoted to Major in 2005.

Completing SO2 staff appointments supporting the defence training review (DTR) at Cosford and latterly as the lead for personnel and infrastructure on the Army General Staff he was selected for sub-unit command in 2010.


Command of 4 Regiment Army Air Corp workshop followed, during which his unit supported Apache Helicopters on Op HERRICK (Afghanistan) and Op ELLAMY (Libya). Subsequently selected to be the engineering member on the 3-man service inquiry panel investigating the Red Arrows’ XX177 fatal accident in Nov 11, he remained committed to the enquiry until its conclusion in 2014.
A short period as the mechanical engineering authority within the Apache Helicopter Project Team followed.


Gaining promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in Sep 13, assuming the post of continuing airworthiness manager / chief air engineer for Army unmanned air systems he deployed on OP HERRICK (Afghanistan) to support Watchkeeper’s inaugural operational flight. Lieutenant Colonel Hughes was then selected as the inaugural Commanding Officer of 106 Battalion REME in Feb 15. Forming the Army Reserve unit as a result of Army 2020 restructuring, with an Area Of Responsibility (AOR) covering the entirety of Scotland and Northern Ireland, during his tenure he recruited over 350 personnel and deployed the unit to Cyprus on Ex LION STAR.


Returning to the Apache Delivery Team in the role of SO1 Engineering Airworthiness Authority in Apr 17 he introduced the Emergency Flotation System to the platform. Short toured from the appointment he gained promotion to Colonel in Apr 18 assuming the role of Type Airworthiness Authority and Chief Engineer within the Remotely Piloted Air Systems’ Delivery Team.


He has held type airworthiness authority for the entirety of UK Defence Remotely Piloted Air Systems including Reaper (Class 3), Protector (Class 3), Watchkeeper (Class 2) and Minis Portfolio (Class 1). He also led UK certification effort to gain a Military Type Certificate for the Protector RPAS; an achievement which scheduled for achievement in 2024 will be a global first for an RPAS of the MALE class.


Promoted to Brigadier in 2023 he is now the Head of Engineering Assurance for the Land Domain within Defence Equipment and Support responsible for overseeing effective procurement of equipment that is safe to operate.


A fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and Chartered Engineer, Colonel Hughes enjoys mentoring those seeking professional registration and conducting interviews on behalf of the society.

 

Capitaine de Frégate Johann Eidesheim

Capitaine de Frégate Johann Eidesheim

 Commander Johann Eidesheim joins the Navy in 1993. Following his Flight Navigator and Radar Operator course, he is assigned to the Maritime Patrol Squadron 21F in Nîmes-Garons and participates in many operational missions. From 1998, he holds the position of tactical coordinator on ATL2 and stands out positively during several operational deployments.

In 2001, appointed Deputy Liaison Officer on board of two American aircraft carriers as part of "Enduring Freedom" operation, he is the aeronautic adviser of the coalition Commander. Coming back to a Maritime Patrol Squadron, he participates in numerous operational missions: Djibouti (2006), "Licorne" operation (Ivory Coast), "Epervier/Dorca'' operation (Chad).

In 2009, he joins the training department at the Naval Air Station of Lann-Bihoué. Appointed course director, he is in charge of the tactical training for the maritime patrol crews. In November 2010, he is nominated as ATL2 adviser within the "Sahel" crisis cell for the planning and control operation centre of the military headquarters.

In 2011, he is appointed to the MPA Warfare Center (CENTEX PATSIMAR). Qualified Forward Air Controller Airborne (FAC-A), he participates in “Harmattan” operation (Libya) then Serval (Mali).

In 2014, he is appointed to MARCOM in Northwood (UK) as operational planner. In September 2019, graduated of War College, he is appointed within the Navy Operational Headquarters in charge of Navy Air operational employment and doctrine.

The Commander Johann Eidesheim is currently commanding the MPA Warfare Center (CENTEX PATSIMAR).

Totalling more than 5000 flying hours, 22 deployments on operational theatres, he is awarded the Legion of Honour, the National Order of Merit as well as three unit awards for combat missions.

Colonel Adrian Fischer

 Adrian studied natural sciences in Zurich. In 1996, as a reserve captain and chief image analyst in a Mirage reconnaissance squadron, he embarked on a military career in the RPAS training command of the Swiss Air Force.

He accumulated several hundred missions and flight hours on the RUAG RANGER tactical UAV system as a pilot and flight instructor.

In 2003, he obtained a Master's degree in Defence Management from Cranfield University.

He commanded an RPAS Company, the 7th RPAS Squadron, the 7th RPAS Squadron and the 84th RPAS Command at Emmen AFB. Today, he is Chief of the Reconnaissance Section in the Swiss Air Force Staff.

Adrian was also a member of the UAV OAT Task Force at EUROCONTROL and represents Switzerland in NATO's Joint Capability Group UAS.

Colonel Danielle Medaglia

 COL Medaglia was commissioned via ROTC from Temple University in 1999, joining the Aviation branch and qualifying as a UH-60 Black Hawk pilot.

She went on to command Charlie Company, 3-158th Aviation Regiment and joined the Acquisition Corps in 2009. Among her subsequent assignments are: Assistant Product Manager for the Enhanced Medium Altitude Reconnaissance and Surveillance System; Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD; Chief of Flight Operations supporting the DCMA with duty at the Boeing Company, Philadelphia (where she also qualified as a CH-47F Chinook pilot); Product Manager, CH-47F Helicopter Product Office; and Executive Officer to the Principal Military Deputy, ASA(ALT).

She has also attended the Air War College, Air University, earning a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies.

She became Project Manager for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Project Office within the Program Executive Office, Aviation in September 2022.

The Project Office’s mission is to revolutionize the battlefield by delivering uncrewed weapons systems that extend the Army’s combat commanders’ operational reach – with its motto being: ‘Never a fair fight!’

Colonel Giuseppe Urbano

Colonel Giuseppe URBANO was born on February 20th, 1973 in Terlizzi (BARI).

He attended the Italian Air Force Academy from 1994 to 1998.

On February 11th, 2000 he graduated as Military Pilot on T-38 within the Euro NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) School of Sheppard AFB (TX).

From April 2000, following the 168th Ground School on F-104 and the 132nd Aircraft Qualification Course on TF-104, he qualified on TF-104 aircraft within the Operational Training Squadron of Grosseto AFB.

In April 2001 he was assigned to the 31st Wing of Ciampino (ROMA) and qualified on Falcon-50 and Airbus-319 as 306th Flight Squadron’s pilot, flying mainly state and emergency flights. His duties were from Commander of the 517th Flight Unit, to Chief of the Flights and Statistics Cell and Chief of the Intelligence Cell.

In 2004 he attended the 71st Intelligence Course and in 2006 he was deployed in Nassiraya (IRAQ) as Chief of the J2 Air Cell, within the Italian Command in Dhi Qar province, and in 2007 he was deployed in Herat (AFGHANISTAN) as Chief of the Intelligence Cell, within the ISAF Operation.

In 2008 he attended the Advanced Officer Training at the Air War College in Florence.

In 2009 carried out a period of Staff Tour within the Air Force General Staff.

On January 2010 he was assigned in Sheppard AFB (TX) as T-6 Instructor and Check Pilot within the ENJJPT school.

On January 2013 he was back in Italy and assigned to the European Union Branch within the Defence General Staff.

From September 2014 to June 2015 he attended the Joint Forces Staff College within the Centre for Defense Higher Studies of Rome and in July 2015 attended the Legal Advisor Course.

On August 17th, 2015 he took over the Chief of the Base Operation Office of the Flight School of Latina AFB and on June 1st, 2016 he took command of the 207th Flight Squadron, flying simultaneusly as Instructor Pilot on T-260B aircraft.

On March 2017 he was deployed in Rieti as Watchkepper of the Coordination Cell of the Joint Operation Headquarter within the Command and Controll Unit of the Civil Protection, in support of the earthquake area of Sabina.

From September 2017 to Dicember 2019, he was assigned to the Centre for Defence Innovation withing the Defence General Staff, as Chief of the Joint Doctrine Branch.

The 1st of July 2019 he was promoted Colonel and on December 20th, 2019 appointed as Director of the Studies Directorate of the Air Force Academy of Pozzuoli.

Colonel URBANO has a bachelor degree in Aeronautical Science and has flown over 3863 flight hours on the following aircrafts: T-260A, T-37, T-38, TF-104, FALCON-50, AIRBUS-319, T-6, T-260B, T-339A, T-2006A, RAPIER X-25.
Awards and decorations:

- NATO Medal for flying operations in Kosovo from September to November 2001;
- NATO Medal for flying operations in the former Jugoslavia from Dicember 2001 to February 2002;
- Air Force Medal for long service as military pilot (bronze);

Colonel URBANO is married with Miss Isabella and has two daughters and one son.

Colonel Juliano Barros Cota

 Col Barros was born in Coronel Fabriciano, Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1973. He graduated from the Brazilian Air Force Academy in 1997 and was promoted to the current rank in 2019.

He flew for 15 years, amassing more than 2,500 flight hours on a variety of types, including the AT-26 Xavante, A-29 Super Tucano, and A-1 AMX - with a focus on Air Interdiction, Close Air
Support, and Reconnaissance missions. He has also flown the Hermes 450 UAV.

He has participated in numerous international exercises, been the Foreign Liaison Officer to 12th Air Force at Davis-Monthan AFB and also the Chief of the Training Control Division, Training Command HQ.

He now commands the Santa Cruz Air Force Base

Colonel Nick Moore

 Nick is a serving British Army Officer. He has been employed principally in Aircraft Engineering roles for much of his 30 years of service.


His current post is in the UK Defence Equipment & Support Organisation as Chief Engineer and Type Airworthiness Authority for Tactical RPAS employed in UK Defence, which includes Watchkeeper.


He has extensive experience in Piloted Army Rotary and Fixed Wing aircraft as well as operational experience from Iraq, Afghanistan and Mali.

Colonel Stefano Bianca

Colonel Stefano Bianca

 Stefano Bianca joined the Italian Air Force Academy as a Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) on 20th Sept. 1990, training both at home and abroad (Randolph AFB (USA), RAF Cottesmore (UK), and RAF Coningsby (UK)).

He was first assigned to XII Sqn in Gioia del Colle AFB, in the Air Defence role on the Tornado F-3 (Air Defence Variant) and then to 154th Sqn in Ghedi AFB in the strike/nuclear role on the Tornado IDS.

He is qualified on the following aircraft: SF-260, T-37, T-38, T-43, MB339A and C, Tornado F-3 ADV, and Tornado IDS, with a flight time of almost 1700 hrs.

Colonel Bianca is now the Force Deputy Commander and Training Centre Commander of NATO’s Alliance Ground Surveillance Force.

Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Böhm

 Lt Col Daniel Böhm is currently serving as Program Manager for the new ADS 15 System.

Lt Col Böhm began his military career as a photo interpreter in a Mirage III reconnaissance squadron, staying in this field as a reserve officer for 10 years. In 2004 he changed to the UA career field by joining the 7th UA squadron. He has been serving professionally in the Swiss Air Force as part of the UAS 95, 84th Training Command since 2007. Until 2018 he was Chief Pilot UAS 95 at the 84th Training Command and was until 2013 the commander of the 7th UA squadron.

Lt Col Böhm completed a master in mechanical engineering and economics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zürich.

He was as a manager for an international telecom supplier for a period of fourteen years. In this function, he planned and implemented numerous IT projects, reorganised global distribution channels and established a new product line developed for the global market.

Lt Col Böhm accumulated several hundred missions and flight hours on the tactical UAS RANGER as pilot, payload operator and flight instructor.

 Presently in transition to my new role as deputy director CMC EUROCONTROL. Official denomination is Head of Stakeholder Support and Business Management. Before I was from 2009 to today the PoC EUROCONTROL for military RPAS integration into non segregated airspace. This included R&D work in the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) as a project manager as well as the role of the co chairman of the NATO Sense and Avoid Specialist Team (SAA ST). These roles were also accompanied by membership of RPAS related NATO working groups (like the Joint Capability Group Unmanned Aircraft Systems, JCGUAS), working closely together with EASA for rulemaking, EDA for civil military coordination as well as aviation industry partners supporting the integration.

 Maj A.R. Gushaty joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2002 and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2007. He attended the professional flight test program at National Test Pilot School in 2010 and was subsequently employed as a rotary wing Flight Test Engineer for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following a tour as a Jr. Maintenance Engineer at the CH147F Chinook Sqn, time as a Staff Officer in operational headquarters, a deployment on Op Impact (Kuwait), and an opportunity as Deputy Commanding Officer of 19 Air Maintenance Squadron, Maj Gushaty has transitioned to the newest Royal Canadian Air Force Occupation: Air Operations Officer. In his currently role, Maj Gushaty is leading the development of UAS Operational Flight Test in the RCAF in preparation for the RPAS Project’s UAS delivery; expected to award contract early 2024.

Andy McIntyre is the head of the Army and Navy Capability Exploitation Teams within the Future Capability Group (FCG) at Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S).

The FCG exists to help explore new capabilities so that they can then be exploited at scale. Increasingly, projects are ‘Agile By Default’ to deliver early operational advantage. The Group works closely with all the Front-line Commands, DSTL and central MOD areas such as the DIU and DASA. Andy has a long standing career in MOD and DE&S and is both an engineer and highly experience programme and portfolio manager. He is a passionate advocate of delivering Operational Advantage through a better application of strategic thinking on innovation, inclusive cultures and sustainability.

Mr Biruk Abraham

Mr Biruk Abraham

Biruk Abraham is a Sr. International Representative with the FAA’s Air Traffic Organization supporting collaboration on technical aspects of air traffic management with European institutions as well as air navigation service providers in Africa, Europe, and Middle East. Prior to this assignment, he served as a Branch Manager in the FAA’s NextGen Technology Development and Prototyping Division. In that role, he oversaw a portfolio of concept development, research, and engineering projects that envision and support evolution of the National Airspace System including integration of new types of aircraft and technologies to support advancement towards the future of air traffic. He also supported international efforts to include the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Panels and Working Groups as well as bi-lateral and multi-lateral collaboration on research activities with international partners. Biruk began his 20 year career in aviation by earning his Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor certifications before joining the U.S. Army, where he served as a UH-60 Blackhawk Pilot for eight years. He holds a Master of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

I was born in Grosseto in the south of Tuscany where Nicola got a degree in Aerospace Engineering at Pisa University in 2003. One year later I moved to Triest where I live with my family.
I have been working for Leonardo company for almost 20 years and in 2010 he has been certified as Project Management Professional.
I spent almost the whole time in Leonardo working in the service domain, at the beginning as technical leader for the setup of the F2000 Typhoon training service of the first Italian ASTA simulator and then as the Project Manager for the performance based Tornado Training Service for IAF. In 2015 I moved to Marketing taking care of Electronics Division Innovative Services as well as working as Divisional Country manager in Australia and Mexico.
I have been working on RPAS matters for ten years and I am now the Head of Product Sales Support & Partnership for the Line of Business Airborne Systems in the Electronics Division of Leonardo.

Mr Roland Gebhardt

Mr Gebhardt joined the Bundeswehr as a civil servant in 2006.

He was the Deputy Director of a metrology section of a Technical Centre of the Bundeswehr from 2006 to 2008 - and became the Program Manager of various night vision programs of BAAINBw from 2008 to 2018.

Since 2018, he has been the Program Manager of the German Heron TP RPAS.

Mr Simon Holford

 Mr Simon Holford is a senior civil servant responsible for the delivery of the Defence Remotely Piloted Air Systems portfolio; a wide range of programmes varying in size, customer and place in the life cycle.

Before that, he was the ISR Director at Babcock International, the Commander of Joint Force Logistics at the UK MoD, Team Leader of the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme, Chief of Staff at Force Troops Command, and ISR and Counter Measures Delivery Team Leader at DE&S.

He has graduated from King’s College’s UK Defence Higher Command and Staff Course, in addition to holding a post-graduate degree in Major Programmes Leadership from the University of Oxford.

For 15 years, Nataliia has been the General manager at the event agency Diplomat Service, leading more than 50 projects in Ukraine and abroad. Nataliia also has experience working with government institutions; she’s been an advisor to the First Deputy Minister of Economy. Since early 2023, as Chief Operations Officer at the Ukrainian defense tech cluster Brave1, Nataliia has been responsible for cooperation with government institutions, enterprises, developers, funds, startups, and Ukrainian Defense tech representatives. With Brave1 officially launched on April 26th, 2023, Nataliia and her team unite the Defense tech ecosystem, scale it up, and push it forward to bring the victory closer through tech innovations.

Wing Commander Conan Mullineux

Wing Commander Conan Mullineux was awarded a first-class honours degree in Maths and Physics at Keele University before joining the RAF in 2001. As a Tornado GR4 Weapons Systems Officer, he enjoyed postings to IX(B) and II(AC) Sqns, RAF Marham, before his Qualified Weapons Instructor Course in 2009 led to a tour on 617 Sqn, RAF Lossiemouth. On promotion to Sqn Ldr, he exercised Flight Commander duties as OC Weapons, OC Training and the Executive Officer on the GR4 Operational Conversion Unit, XV(R) Sqn.

Since hanging up his flying helmet in 2015, Mullineux has completed staff tours in the Permanent Joint Headquarters, Air Capability Delivery and the ISTAR Force Headquarters. Following his deployment as National Approval Authority in the Middle East, he has returned to RAF Waddington to lead the ISTAR FHQ Remotely Piloted Air Systems team.

Conan is married to Lisa, who outranks him both at work and at home. Both enjoy time outside with their dog, Buster; however, with two young children their interests are typically hampered by sleepless nights and ballet lessons.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
