Future Soldier Technology USA

As the US Army and Marine Corps seek to enhance their capabilities in preparation for potential ‘near-peer’ conflict, there is renewed focus on the most crucial and unchanging conduit of dismounted warfare: the individual soldier.

In line with the creation of US Army Futures Command and the key US Army modernization priority of increasing Soldier Lethality, Future Soldier Technology USA will bring together a community of senior military leaders, program managers, and researchers at the forefront of delivering enhanced soldier capabilities, from the US and beyond.

Future Soldier Technology USA is the only dedicated soldier and marine equipment modernisation conference in North America. With a unique focus on lightening the load and delivering greater lethality through advanced technology, this event will enable dismounted soldier and marine program managers to meet and test the latest equipment capable of enhancing infantry operations.

Key Topics Addressed Will Include:

  • Enhancing lethality
  • Lightening the load
  • Increasing soldier power
  • Optimising night vision
  • Dismounted situational awareness
  • Maximising survivability
  • Transforming manoeuvrability
  • Leveraging Augmented Reality (AR)

With senior support from the US Army’s PEO Soldier, Marine Corps Systems Command, Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC), Army Futures Command: Cross Functional Team Soldier Lethality, the Rapid Equipping Force, US Army Research Laboratory, Maneuver Battle Lab, this is the only place to hear the very latest developments in soldier modernization from the key decision makers at the heart of the world’s best military.

Our Night Vision facility in Roanoke, VA has designed and manufactured USG qualified image intensifier tubes and night vision goggles for over 60 years. We have designed and develop image intensifier tubes, high performance image intensifier tubes, thermal imaging sensors, fused goggle systems and individual soldier systems (ISS). Our engineering staff includes approximately 80 R&D and manufacturing engineers including electrical, mechanical, software, system and optical disciplines. We have a R&D laboratory for prototype builds and functional and environmental testing capabilities. Our current production capacity is approximately 10,000 image intensifier tubes and 3,000 goggles per month. Most recently we were awarded a contract by the US Army on Phase 1 of the ENVG-B program which is a rapid prototype program to deliver a fused binocular system. This product is an upgraded system that features our state-of-the-art white phosphor image intensifier tubes, improved thermal camera, overlaid augmented reality, sensor/navigation data and more. While this is just the first phase for a small quantity of evaluation units, this order is significant because it positions the business to further engage with the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and SOCOM on the ENVG-B platform and helps set the stage for future production awards. Our R&D team is currently developing new technology to advance both the performance of and manufacturability of image intensifier tubes.

    Marathon Targets

    Sponsors and Exhibitors
    https://marathon-targets.com/

Marathon Targets enable ‘same day lethality improvement’: immediate and dramatic improvement in soldier lethality, by providing realistic AI-enabled moving targets that look, move, and even behave like real people. We address the fundamental problem common to all militaries: the only time their warfighters perform live fire training with realistic moving targets - is in actual combat. The battlefield is not the place to practice the life-or-death skill of shooting the enemy, before he shoots you. Marathon solves this root cause problem with AI-enabled autonomous humanoid robots that mimic human behaviors. Shoot one robot, and the others will autonomously scatter, or self-organize a counterattack. By training against a thinking, adaptive and unpredictable robotic enemy force, lethality improves immediately, to help win ‘the Fight Tonight.’ In addition to ‘same day lethality improvement’, autonomous targets have other significant benefits: • ‘Same day range modernization’ – almost any range can be turned into a state-of-the-art moving target range in just hours. This saves billions of construction, and a decade of MILCON process • Dramatically increased range throughput – the Army measured 340% increase in sniper training throughput with autonomous robots. The net effect is essentially ‘tripling the number of ranges’ • Robotic role-players – the robots can replace costly human role-players The autonomous robots can run a marathon at a near world record pace, and are ballistically protected for 7.62 240B’s and even .338 Lapua. Run flat tires, AWD, and autonomous obstacle avoidance enable operation on almost any range. Robots can operate indoors and forests, thanks to LIDAR navigation. Marathon’s 5th generation targets have been COTS since our first deliveries to the Australian Defense Force in 2008. We have 7 US offices and robot rental fleets on 4 continents. Contracts are typically ‘training as a service.’ This enables O&M money to be spent, and without a long term purchasing commitment.

    WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
