The SAE Media Group are pleased to present the next annual conference in the sell-out portfolio of Armoured Vehicle events: Future Armoured Vehicles Situational Awareness (FAVSA) 2022, taking place on the 4th - 5th April 2022 in London.

Militaries around the world are continuing to evolve and develop their armoured vehicle capabilities to provide increased situational awareness in order to empower commanders to make more informed decisions on the battlefield. Modern threats and challenges such as the asymmetric and urban nature of modern warfare are fuelling industry to produce ever-more innovative solutions to ensure armoured vehicles can collate, integrate and use information and data through a range of sources previously unavailable.

This conference provides the unparalleled opportunity to hear from international military representatives, industry and system integrators who are continuing to drive innovation in the field of situational awareness technology. They will be sharing their insight into ongoing and future requirements and developing a wider understanding of the shared challenges faced.
 

Now in its 6th year as the only event of its kind, FAVSA 2022 will include wide-ranging contributions from those directly involved in allied nations development programmes as well as the engineers and technical experts behind the latest solutions such as: Vetronic Architectures,AI and AR technology, autonomous capabilities, CIS, sensor technology, active protection systems and crew display solutions.

Colonel Warren Sponsler

Colonel Warren Sponsler

COL Warren Sponsler is a US Army Armor Officer currently serving as the Chief of Staff for the Next Generation Combat Vehicles Cross Functional Team (NGCV CFT) at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, as a part of Army Futures Command. COL Sponsler has served in a variety of command and staff positions around the operational Army including Company Command in the 3rd Infantry Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and multiple operational deployments around the world. COL Sponsler commanded the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, Colorado, and in the Middle East supporting Operation Spartan Shield. Following command, COL Sponsler served as the Senior Brigade Combat Team Observer/Control-Trainer at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California, and subsequently completed a US Army War College Fellowship with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Security Studies Program prior to assuming current duties.

Dr Periklis Charchalakis is the Technical Director of Vetronics Research Centre UK and Vetronics Research Centre EU. Since 2004 at the Vetronics Research Centre UK he has worked on several UK DSTL funded military land-systems fundamental research programmes, and on UK government funded information security research & development programmes. Since 2020 at the Vetronics Research Centre EU he has been working on EC EDIDP and EDA research programmes on Modular UGV and Active Protection System architectures. His areas of expertise are high-integrity embedded systems, safety & security architectures for military vehicle platform, low-latency secure embedded communication networks, and embedded systems offensive & defensive cybersecurity.

Dr Thomas Ferris

Thomas K. Ferris is an Associate Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University-College Station with a courtesy appointment in Environmental and Occupational Health at Texas A&M Health Science Center. He is the Director of the NSF I/UCRC Center for Health Organization Transformation (https://chotnsf.org), and additionally directs TAMU’s Human Factors & Cognitive Systems (HF&CS) Laboratory. He has a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Iowa, and MS and PhD degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, and 17 years of experience as a human systems researcher.

Dr. Ferris’ research interests can be summarized as the study of, and design to support, human cognition in sociotechnical engineered systems. His primary focus involves human information processing and ways to support attention and task management to ensure safe operations and support multitasking performance. He has interest and experience in applying his research to the domains of medicine (anesthesiology, neonatal intensive care, patient flow modeling), military operations (ground vehicle interfaces, UV control and operations), aviation (human-automation interaction, cockpit displays), construction science (advanced displays for operator awareness), and ground transportation (driver distraction and state estimation, in-vehicle information systems). His research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of Defense, and industry.

Major Philippe Masse

Major Philippe Masse was born in Montréal, Québec. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1998. He became an Infantry Officer of the Royal 22e Régiment after graduation from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2004.


Major Masse served with his regiment as a Platoon Commander, Operations Officer, Company second-in-command (2ic) and Officer Commanding the Parachute Company. He was deployed in Afghanistan twice. First, as a light infantry platoon commander at the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team in 2006-07. The second deployment was as the Parachute Company 2ic for the Canadian Battle Group in 2010-11.
His extra regimental postings include experience at the Canadian Special Force Command Headquarters (CANSOFCOM HQ) as international operations planner and strategic liaison officer. He also served as the executive assistant of the Commander 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group.
In 2017, Maj Masse completed the Army Technical Staff Officer program (ATSO), and transitioned to the project and acquisition domain as the Project Director for the Light Armoured Vehicle Specialist Variant Enhancements project (PD LAV SVE). Maj Masse is currently employed as part of the Directorate of Land Requirements (DLR) of the Canadian Army Headquarters.

Mr Blendi Berati

Mr Blendi Berati

Mr. Blendi Berati is currently serving as the Program Manager for the Crew Optimization & Augmentation Technologies (COAT) program at the US Army Combat Capability Development Command (DEVCOM), Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC). He oversees several efforts that spans multiple US Army commands such as GVSC, Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the Soldier Center (SC), in the field of Human-Autonomy Teaming, AI & Intelligent Agents, as applied to US Army’s Man-Unmanned Teaming ground formations.
Previously Mr. Berati has served in a variety of leadership roles at the US Army DEVCOM GVSC. He served as the Deputy Program Manager for the COAT Program, where he oversaw transition efforts within US Army’s Programs of Record. Mr. Berati was the System Engineering Lead for the Ground Degraded Visual Environments program, with the focus on increasing Situational Awareness for ground vehicles operating closed hatch under degraded visual environments such as dust, rain & smoke.
Mr. Berati served under the GVSC’s Chief of Staff, Projects Standards Office as the enterprise’s Project & Process Quality Lead supporting GVSC’s S&T community in leading culture change and advancing the Project Management discipline of the organization. He defined mission, vision, and strategic goals of GVSC’s S&T programs’ quality and adherence to established Project Management best practices.
Mr. Berati also served as the Team Lead for the Ground Domain Planning & Integration (GDPI). He led the development and execution of GVSC’s Technology and Product Development Stage-Gate for all S&T programs and projects.
Prior to his government service Mr. Berati has served in diverse roles and industries in the private sector. He worked in research, development, and manufacturing in the oilfield industry at Schlumberger Corp, in automotive industry as Center of Competence in Vehicle Development at DaimlerChrystler Corporation, and Vehicle Engineering at Porsche Engineering GmbH, and other research and manufacturing roles.
Mr. Berati is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He is also experienced in and holds certificates in Lean Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma; he is an Acquisition Core Member. He holds a Masters of Science Engineering Degree in Alternative Technologies, and a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He holds several awards and commendations such as the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, Civilian Service Commendation Medal, Valedictorian of his BS Engineering Graduating class and other honors.

Mr Christian JACQUES has been working for 20 years for French company ARQUUS, which develops, produces and supports armoured wheeled vehicles for military applications.
After 6 years in automotive industry, Mr Jacques, joined ARQUUS’ R&D department to work on vetronics and systems architecture. He has managed several positions within Arquus, in R&D, but also Business Development, Programme and Product management.

He has been SCORPION Programme Director for ARQUUS, and is currently Director of Innovation. From his experience, Mr Jacques has an excellent knowledge of Defence industry, technologies, and had a lot of interactions with end users to better understand their needs.

Mr John  Crozier

John Crozier is the Technical Partner responsible for the operation of the Defence Science and Technology (Dstl) Urban Canyon research project in Situation Awareness (SA) for combat vehicles.
He is secretary to the UK Vehicle Systems Integration (VSI) Steering Group and a representative in the Military Vetronics Association (MILVA) which developed STANAG 4754 NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture (NGVA). In UK he is a member of the Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) and GVA Data Model working groups.
John served 24 years in the Army Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) across a wide range of operational theatres.

Mr Keith Smith

Keith was a Royal Air Force avionics apprentice and spent 20 years in air force service. Keith joined the Ministry of Defence in 1996 and has worked in systems engineering roles on major projects in the Air and Land domains.

Keith has been the lead for the development of the UK Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) approach and standard since 2011. As well as being responsible for the GVA Standard, he has led and championed the development and use of the Land Data Model (LDM), which is key to achieving the MOD aspiration of interoperable open systems architectures and wider cross system interoperability.

Mr Martin Jõesaar

Mr Martin Jõesaar served in the Estonian Defence Forces for 16 years as an officer. He added valuable contribution into the integration of Short Range Air Defence Missile Systems to the existing units at the early stage of his career. However, the latter part and the majority of his time was spent on helping to build up the Special Operations Forces Unit in order to meet the new challenges of NATO. This included different command positions within in the structure and contribution as an instructor and an operations officer at the HQ, including a deployment to Afghanistan under CJSOTF10 in 2012.


In 2019, Mr Jõesaar left the military in a rank of major and joined the Defence Industry side instead as the COO of an unmanned aerial systems developer and producer Threod Systems, based in Estonia. Additionally to the everyday coordination, ensuring the smooth process flow internally in the factory, one of the main roles for him was sharing the end-user experience. Threod Systems specialises on providing the state of the art equipment tailored according to the needs of the military and security forces. In which it is crucial to understand the intelligence collection details and its connections to the higher level HQ planning process for providing the full solution for the clients.
In the end of 2020, Mr Jõesaar accepted the offer to become the representative of the participating member states of the iMUGS project. By being the link between the industry consortium and the participating nations, he will play the key role in ensuring the full transparency of the project and helping all counterparts to understand the process in the mutual way. Coordinating such a complex international and multilingual project was the kind of challenge he gladly accepted.

Education: MSc in Aeronautical Engineering , PgC in Technology Management, and Prince 2 and MSP Practitioner.
Experience: 27 years of experience providing and managing in-service support for military systems. After 5 years serving in the Spanish Air Force as Project Officer, I joined NSPA (former NAMSA) in 1999 responsible for anti-tank systems support, later expanded to Land Combat Missiles and Electro-Optical Systems and since 2014 responsible for the Engineering and Project Support Branch (Air and Land Combat Systems Programme) where I lead a team of 50 engineers and technicians providing project support and technical assistance for Life Cycle Management of combat systems including missiles, artillery and armoured vehicles.

Pasi has long career in defence industry including land, sea and air domains. Participation in LAVOSAR and MILVA standardization bodies has grown him to be an Open Architecture evangelist.     WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
