SAE Media Group is delighted to announce the 4th UAV Technology conference convening on the 30th of September and 1st of October 2019 in London, United Kingdom.

Now in its 4th year, UAV Technology is shifting from its previous Central and Eastern European focus to a more global approach by moving to London, with an overarching theme of providing a tactical edge to the warfighter through unmanned capabilities.

COL Eric Rannow serves as the Military Deputy at the Combat Capability Development Command’s (CCDC) Aviation & Missile Center (AvMC) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
COL Rannow was commissioned into the Field Artillery upon graduation from the United States Military Academy. In the 2000 timeframe, he transitioned into the Army Acquisition Corps.
COL Rannow holds a Master’s Degree in Material Acquisition Management from Florida Institute of Technology and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He is also a graduate of the Harvard University Senior Executive Fellows program.
COL Rannow’s noteworthy awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Army Staff Identification Badge, and Air Assault & Airborne Badges.

I commanded the Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron in Mont de Marsan (2016) dealing with new standards on Rafale and M2000, then the 30th Wing which includes the four fighters squadron of the airbase (2017-2019).

From summer 2019: head of aviation security office in an cross ministerial directorate working for the Prime Minister's cabinet.

Colonel Stefano Bianca

Col. Stefano BIANCA was born in La Spezia (Italy), on February 15th 1970.
He joined the Italian Air Force Academy in September 1990 as a Navigator and went through standard ITA Air Force aircrews training abroad, in Randolph AFB (USA), RAF Cottesmore AB (UK), and RAF Coningsby (UK). He flew as a Combat Ready Navigator in both Air Defense and Strike-Bomber roles, on the Tornado F-3 (ADV - Air Defense Variant), and on Tornado PA-200. With about 1700 flying hours and more than eight years of NATO working experience in Belgium, since Aug 2018 he is the Deputy Commander of NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) Force, in Sigonella AFB (Italy).
Col. Bianca is married since 1996 with Christine, American citizen and former USAF employee. They have two children: Daniel (age 23) and Isabel (age 21).

Colonel Xavier Foissey

Colonel Xavier FOISSEY joined the French Air Force Academy in 1989.
Serving as a tactical transport pilot, he flew C160 Transall aircraft in France, then in Germany as an exchange pilot. He commanded the 1/62 transport squadron equipped with CASA CN235. He totals 3,500 flight hours.
He was assigned to several headquarters, in particular in the domain of the engagement of French Armed Forces on the national territory. His previous appointment was Chief of staff of French Armed Forces in New Caledonia.
He has carried out numerous missions around the world and four overseas operations, the latest one being at the Barkhane CJHQ in Sahel.
After his graduation at the NATO Defence College, he was assigned in February 2019 as a doctrine publications’ editorial officer at the “Joint Centre for Concepts, Doctrine and Experimentation”.

Commander Jamie Sayer

Commander Jamie Sayer joined the Royal Navy in 1995 as an Air Engineering Officer (AEO). He holds a BEng (Hons) degree in Aerospace Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the University of The West of England. For his first front-line squadron tour, he was appointed to 801 Naval Air Squadron – operating the mighty Sea Harrier aircraft. On 801 NAS, he undertook deployments in support of Op Southern Watch (the IRAQ no fly zone) and Op Palliser (Sierra Leone). Following this appointment he was selected for the Joint Force Harrier Role Office at RAF High Wycombe; to bring his experience to the RAF element of Joint Force Harrier on how to deploy to sea and how to do expeditious detachments in the best traditions of the Royal Navy! He was then launched into a demanding project job in the Merlin (EH101) Project Team, where he was 2i/c for the Merlin Retrofit. The project involved working with 2 Force Commands (RN & RAF) and industry to successfully roulement 66 aircraft through significant work packages (400+ mods on RN Mk1) without disrupting front-line readiness levels.

As Lieutenant Commander, in 2005, he was appointed to Fleet HQ as the Release to Service Manager, responsible for the airworthiness for all 13 types of Royal Navy aircraft, including the more peculiar Dauphin helicopter and Mirach towed target. Whilst in this post, he oversaw the clearances for the Sea King Mk4 modifications that would facilitate the aircraft’s use in Afghanistan. After leaving Fleet HQ he was fortunate enough to convince the RN that he would be a perfect candidate for an MBA course at the Cranfield School of Management. Whilst on course he wrote a thesis analysing the contractual relationship between MoD and the UK Defence Aerospace Sector.

After requesting a “junglie” unit, Jamie was surprised and delighted that he ended up as AEO of 845 Commando Helicopter Sqn, providing vital support on Operations in Afghanistan. Whilst on 845, he saw the Sqn receive the prestigious Breitling Trophy and Bambara Flight Safety Trophy. Since then he has completed a number of tours at DE&S Abbey Wood, including a valuable role as the Lightning II Deputy Sustainment Lead and UK Fleet Manager, before being promoted to Commander. He is now the Type Airworthiness Authority for several Unmanned Air Systems (Small Class) within the UAS Team at Abbey Wood. Jamie lives with his wife Christine and daughters Lara and Kezia in Dorset. He is a qualified Services ski instructor and is ski tour leader trained. He also plays guitar and once had a local touring band, The Boxing Frogs.

Dr Ivan Petrunin

Dr.Ivan Petrunin, is a Lecturer in Digital Signal Processing for Autonomous Systems at Cranfield University. He has gained his MSc in Electronics from National Technical University of Ukraine in 1998 and PhD in Signal Processing from Cranfield University in 2013. Since 2005 he has been involved in a number of research projects concerning developments of signal processing algorithms with application to detection of weak non-linear signatures in vibration and acoustic signals. In the recent years his research interests are focused on technology development for autonomous systems, covering areas of connectivity, cognitive communication, conventional and alternative PNT.

Min-Guk Seo received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, Korea, in 2012, 2014 and 2017, respectively. He is currently a research fellow in autonomous systems at Cranfield University. His current research interests include guidance, navigation and control of autonomous vehicle systems.

Group Captain Lind joined the Air Force in 1986. He is a graduate of from the Australia Defence Force Academy, Canadian Aerosystems course and the Australian Command and Staff College. He flew AP-3C aircraft as a Tactical Coordinator, is flight test qualified and was the Commanding Officer of the School of Air Warfare training non-pilot aircrew.
Group Captain Lind is currently Director Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance; Electronic Warfare; and Space within Air Force Headquarters with responsibility for capabilities including: P-8A Poseidon, MQ-4 Triton, Space Situational Awareness; Armed Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems; and Intelligence Systems.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Craig

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Craig

Following officer training at Sandhurst, Lt Col Craig was commissioned into the Royal Corps of in Signals in 1992. He completed several Young Officer positions in a variety of Signals units in Germany and UK; these included operational tours to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and one as an Infantry Platoon Commander. He also completed a BEng in Electronic Systems Engineering.
On promotion to Major he worked in several equipment delivery roles in Trunk Communications, Tactical Radio and a significant period in Electronic Counter Measures (Force Protection). In 2005 he studied for a MSc in Military Electronic Systems Engineering with his main project on the use of multiple UAVs to conduct coherent jamming.
From 2010-2012 he commanded 225 Signal Squadron (ECM(FP) based in Northern Ireland. In 2012 he moved to the Chief of Staff of the Battlefield Tactical CIS (BATCIS) project team. BATCIS procure, deliver and support all of Defence’s Tactical CIS, including the Bowman radio system and the trunk system Falcon.
On promotion in 2015 he was posted as the Commanding Officer of the Taurus Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme support unit in Birmingham. He assumed his current role as SO1 Robotics and Autonomous Systems in Army Headquarters on 1 Sep 2017.

Lt Col Shad Reed serves as an International Program Officer in the Air Force Office of Scientific Research’s European office. He is responsible for discovering, funding, and managing novel, cutting-edge research efforts across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). He leads international grants, partnerships, engagements, and strategic direction for multidisciplinary activities that relate to and enable autonomous vehicles. His broad mission is to develop and manage a research portfolio that aims to shape revolutionary breakthroughs to profoundly impact the future of autonomous vehicles for the U.S. Air Force.

Lieutenant General Richard Felton

Lieutenant General Richard Felton

Richard Felton was commissioned as an Infantry officer into the Gloucestershire Regiment in 1985. He transferred to the Army Air Corps in 1998. He was awarded his Army Pilot’s Wings in 1990 and is qualified on the Gazelle (1990), Lynx (1999) and Apache AH-64D (2003).


He commanded 669 Squadron Army Air Corps (1999 – 01), 9 Regiment Army Air Corps (2004-06), 4th Mechanized Brigade (2009-11), UK’s Joint Force Headquarters (2011-13 where as the 1* Chief of Joint Force Operations he was also the Force Commander of the EU Battle Group) and the Joint Helicopter Command (2014 - 17). He assumed the appointment of Director General of the Defence Safety Authority in April 2017-April 2019.

On the staff, he was Chief of Staff of 7th Armoured Brigade (1996-99), SO1 LAND in the Directorate of Operational Capability (2001-03 – responsible for operational audits of UK Defence capabilities for Ministers and the Chiefs of Staff) and Chief of Staff of 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division (2007-09).

He has served on operations as an Infantry Platoon Commander in Northern Ireland (1987-89), as Chief of Operations of the UK led Multi-National Division in Banja Luka, Bosnia (1997), as Com-mander of the UK Joint Helicopter Force (Afghanistan) in 2006, as Chief of Staff of the UK led Multi-National Division in Basra, Iraq (2007-08) and as Commander of the UK led Multi-National Task Force Helmand in Afghanistan in 2010.

He is a graduate of the Army Staff College (1995-6) and the Higher Command and Staff Course (2007) and was a Member of the Royal College of Defence Studies (2013-14).

For operational service, he has been Mentioned in Dispatches (1991) for operations in Northern Ire-land, appointed MBE (1998) for operations in Bosnia, OBE (2006) and CBE (2011) for operations in Afghanistan and awarded a Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service for duties in Libya (2014).

In September 2017 he was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Army Air Corp.

Richard is married to Mia and has one son (Richard) who works with a leading bank in London. He enjoys a variety of sports, art, history and is learning to improve his cooking.
 

Major General Borys Kremenetskyi

Between 1983 and 2000 Maj Gen B. Kremenetskyi held various Air Force command, staff and administration positions including time as Military Observer, UN Mission to Tajikistan. Between 2002 and 2006 he was staff officer at the Cooperation and Regional Security Division, NATO International Military Staff after which he became Head, Euro-Atlantic Integration Department, General Staff, Armed Forces of Ukraine. From 2009 till 2014 he was Defence Adviser, Mission of Ukraine to the EU following position of the First Deputy Chief, Military Cooperation and Peacekeeping Operations General Directorate, General Staff, Armed Forces of Ukraine. He followed as Head of the UKR side of the Joint Ceasefire Coordination and Control Centre (Eastern Ukraine) until taking up his current appointment as Defence and Air Attaché, Embassy of Ukraine to the UK. Maj Gen B. Kremenetskyi is a graduate of the Air Force Engineer Academy (1983) (MA Avionics), US Air War College (1998) and National Security Course, JFK School of Government, Harvard University (2000)

Major General Dre Kraak

Major-General Kraak started at the Military Academy in the Netherlands in 1980. He became a fighter pilot in 1984. Until 2005 he accumulated a total of 2500 flying hours on the F-16 as a weapons- and flight instructor. He served as an F-16 flight commander for several years at 311 Squadron and 323 Top Gun Weapons School. Served there as the commander of the Dutch Weapons Instructor School (The Dutch Top Gun).

After this General Kraak was employed at the RNLAF HQ at the F-16 Operational requirements section,
responsible for the purchase of F-16 weapons. Attended the Advanced Staff College in 1996, after which he was appointed as Commander of the RNLAF F-16 Detachment in Italy for operations over Bosnia in the rank of Ltcol. From 1997 until 2000 General Kraak was the Squadron Commander of the 306 Tactical Fighter Sqn.

In the summer of 1999 he served as Chief of the Planning Cell at the CAOC in Vicenza (Italy) during the Kosovo war. In april 2000 General Kraak was promoted to Colonel and given the job as Chief of the Fighter Branch at the RNLAF HQ in The Hague.

He attended the NATO Defence College in Rome in 2003. After this General Kraak was appointed Chief of the Operational Requirements Branch in the Air Force HQ.

In March 2005 he was appointed Base Commander of the transport helicopter base in the Netherlands: Soesterberg Airbase. In this job he flew Chinook, Cougar and Alouette helicopters.

In July 2007 Major-General Kraak was promoted to Air Commodore and installed as Deputy Director for Requirements at the Netherlands MOD. During 2011 a major restructuring of the Dutch Armed Forces started in which General Kraak got the job to reorganize the IT in de NL MOD and form a Joint IT Command. Since May 2012 he also was appointed Deputy Commander and COO of the IT Command.

After being project manager to form a European Aircrew Training Center, looking for cooperation within Europe, he was promoted to his present rank in December 2015 and thereafter appointed as Commander Deployable Air Command & Control Center in Poggio Renatico, Italy. He just relinquished that Command to his successor and as of January 2019 he is Special Assistant of the Commander of the NATO Air Forces.
 

Major Ricardo Camilo

Ricardo Manuel dos Santos Camilo, born in Lourinhã, Portugal, in 1976, he´s an Infantry Major, currently serves as a Staff Officer in the Force Planning Division in the Portuguese Army General Staff.
At the professional level, the following assignment duties: In the Infantry School, Commander of the Heavy Mortar Platoon and Instructor Training Course for Officers and Sergeants. In Infantry Regiment Nº 1, he serves as a platoon leader in the Commandos Battalion; Commandos Course Instructor; Deputy Commander of the 2nd Commandos Company. Latter in the Commandos Regiment he was Company Commander of the Commandos Training Company; Company Commander of the 3rd Commandos Company and Operations Officer of the Commandos Battalion.
Instructor of the Infantry Captains Career Course, Head of the Training Section and Deputy of the Direction of Evaluation and Quality, initially at the Infantry School and later at the Arms School of the Army.
He conducted two deployments in Afghanistan, in ISAF, as a Deputy Operations Officer in Quick Reaction Force/ISAF in 2005 and Company Commander in 2010/2011.
In Military Cooperation Missions, he was an advisor in East-Timor 2013.
In the scope of education and training, the has following courses: Graduate in the Military Academy; Portuguese Commandos Course; Army Ranger Course of the United States of America; Army Staff Course; and Joint Staff Course.
He is married and has two daughters.
 

Mr Alex Tucker

Mr Alex Tucker

Alex has recently joined Leonardo as a military advisor after 37 years in the Army.

During his military career Alex has commanded a Flight, a Squadron and a Regiment, and has deployed on operations to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Aviation staff appointments have included a Capability Development post in the Central Staff, an Organisation & Deployments post in the Directorate of Army Aviation and the post of Assistant Head Safety and Assurance in the Joint Helicopter Command. Other staff appointments have included that of Assistant Head Firm Base working for the Adjutant General and a Reserves Policy appointment post in the General Staff. He has also served as an instructor at the Defence Academy and been Commandant of the School of Army Aviation. His final appointment was Commander of the Watchkeeper Tactical Unmanned Air System Force in the Joint Helicopter Command.

He is married to the lovely Anna and has two gorgeous daughters, Isi and Emily, who are now both at University, so not quite off his hands. He enjoys skiing, sailing and rugby, though he has hung up his boots a while ago.

Bill is considered subject matter expert by the C-UAS industry, Airport Operators worldwide and is special security advisor to Dutch government parliament members on counter uas/drone, legislation and protection of Netherlands critical infrastructures.
Bill is passionate about bringing smart people together, utilizing technical innovation to make the world safer place for all people no matter their location, race, social status or religious background.
 

Mr Bjorn-Kenneth Nilssen

Mr Bjorn-Kenneth Nilssen

Retired Norwegian Army Lieutenant Colonel with combined civilian education in Economics and Computer science on MBA level with Norwegian Army education from Officers School and Army War Academy.
Highly experienced officer with both Conventional and Special forces background who have served in numerous international missions in North Macedonia, Bosnia and Afghanistan.
Personal responsible for several advanced development within JTAC/Fires area including Special Forces and Joint Fires operational procedures and applications.
Have taken special interest and responsibility for integrating new technology to enhance combat effectiveness and safety.
Awarded the Defence Service Medal with Laurel Branch in 2017 for extensive contribution to the development of Norwegian Special Forces C4IS & Joint Fires capability.
Recently retired after 3 year service in G5 Plans / Fires, Allied Land Command, Izmir Turkey.
 

Mr Bogdan Horvat

Mr Bogdan Horvat

Mr. Horvat is currently serving as the Executive Officer, NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance Management Agency (NAGSMA), responsible for the provision of executive support to the General Manager's Office and to ensure the dissemination and realisation of executive decisions. In addition, he is responsible for coordinating the Executive Staff functions and steering processes and to promote and maintain professional relationships with senior members of NATO bodies like the IS, IMS, NCI Agency, NSPA and commercial entities related to the Programme activities.
Mr. Horvat has a long history in NATO, beginning in February 2002, when he started working in the International Staff of the Defense Support Division, responsible for Partnership for Peace (PfP) cooperation in armaments related issues. After one year of very successful work in the International Staff he became a Defense Adviser in the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Slovenia to NATO responsible for the Conference of National Armaments Director (CNAD) related issues.
In that time Mr. Horvat was directly involved in a number of NATO projects namely Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS), Missile Defense (MD), Active Layered Theatre Ballistic Missile Defense (ALTBMD) and Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC). As a Slovenian representative to the abovementioned projects Mr. Horvat was very much involved in coordination activities with members of the projects as well as development of the Memorandum of Understanding for both AGS and SAC. He was also actively involved in the creation of both the NAGSMO and NAMO charters.
From this part of his professional career, Mr. Horvat takes most pride in the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) project, of which he was a member from the very first day (September 2006). For more than two years he was the Slovenian representative in the SAC Steering Board (SB) and different working groups. Mr. Horvat’s hard work and determination was very well regarded, and as a result, he was selected as the first Chairman of the NAMO Board of Directors (BoD). He held that position for 14 months and under his leadership the SAC initiative received all three strategic C-17 airframes and became operational, transporting military goods and humanitarian aid.
Mr. Horvat holds a University degree in engineering, having finished military academy. After graduation in 1985, he started his military career as a commander of the Engineering Company. His responsibilities ranged from ensuring training for about 120 soldiers in proper equipment operations and battlefield construction as well as building military roads and bridges, to managing supply, and maintenance activities. He also measured and reported performance and effectiveness of the logistic support activities as part of his responsibilities. That part of his professional career provided him with a solid foundation in the areas of managing large organizations, personnel and technical skills, and moreover, it provided him necessary leadership skills and the ability to work as a part of a team.
After leaving the Yugoslav Army in 1990, he immediately started working in the newly formed Slovenian Army, and given the very important task of training the very first generation of Slovenian soldiers. His military positions were all related to establishment of new units and organizations from a technical and organizational point of view. His hard work and skills became well recognised and very well respected, allowing his professional career to escalate rapidly and thus receive several promotions. Before taking his first international post in 2002, Mr. Horvat’s post in Slovenian MOD was the Adviser to the Government for Explosives and Ammunition, which was a highly regarded position within the Ministry of Defence.
Mr. Horvat is fluent in English, Serbian and Croatian and passive in German, French and Dutch.

Hubertus von Janecek is the member of Mynaric's executive board responsible for overseeing sales and production of Mynaric's airborne products, including the company’s new flagship product – the Hawk Air laser communication terminal.
Having held a number of high-tech senior management positions in various countries over the past twenty years, Hubertus has been charged with the introduction and roll-out of the high-speed, ultra-secure air terminal within the defense and security segment. He also oversees the serial production and sale of Mynaric’s ground terminals for space and air applications.
Prior to joining Mynaric in 2018, Hubertus served as Bosch Sensortec vice president of sales, and as CEO, founder and sales director of various other market-leading companies.

Mark McKeeman is the Director of Transport Canada’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Project. Mark heads a small team within Aircraft Services Directorate (ASD) dedicated to acquiring a highly capable Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) for the Government of Canada.
Mark joined Transport Canada in 1995 as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) and has held various management positions within the maintenance organization before joining the joining the RPAS project.
Mark is a licensed Private Pilot and holder of a small RPAS Pilot Certification and a keen interest in the future of RPAS operations in Canada.

Paul Taylor joined Enterprise Control Systems in 2012, became an ECS Company Director in 2016 and continues to lead the Business Development team. Paul is responsible for all ECS sales and business development across the ECS portfolio of specialist military and security data links; military and policing Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) capability; and for specialist Counter Unmanned Air Systems (C-UAS). Paul’s prior experience comprises 21 years as a Royal Signals officer in the British Army with extensive experience in the requirements specification and procurement of specialist counter terrorist technical capability. Paul followed this with a brief period in the specialist technical consulting in the City of London, financial services security and communications sector. This was followed with 11 years at Harris Corporation where he became Head of UK Operations for Harris with responsibility for sales and program delivery of advanced communications systems for UK defence, encompassing a portfolio of; tactical, strategic and specialist radio systems, data communications and next generation encryption capability. Within ECS Paul has taken the lead in the development, deployment and support of C-UAS capability and has contributed extensively to shaping the collaborative working environment with multiple stakeholders to deliver operationally proven C-UAS capability for demanding users.

Rob Jackson is the bespoke aircraft engineer on the growing General Atomics Aeronautical Systems UK (GA-UK) team which was established in November 2010. Based in London, he is responsible for ensuring the airspace integration of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems’ MQ-9B SkyGuardian and PROTECTOR RG Mk 1 remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) into UK and European airspace.
Mr. Jackson comes to GA-UK with 26 years aircraft engineering experience from the UK Royal Air Force where he attained the rank of Squadron Leader, plus seven years consultancy experience working with his own company. Since joining GA-UK he has quickly established himself within the regulatory community for exploiting MALE RPAS into civilian airspace, namely: EUROCAE, JARUS (member of the Detect and Avoid and ACAS Working Groups) and NATO's Sense & Avoid Specialist team’s Industry Advisory Group (SIAG - as Vice-chair) and NATO’s Science & Technology Organisation’s Technical Committee (as Vice-chair), and is an active industry member in briefing the European Defence Agency on MALE RPAS airspace clearance process on the SkyGuardian and PROTECTOR RPAS.
Mr. Jackson holds a Master’s degree in Gas Turbine Technology – Thermal Power from Cranfield University, UK.

Wg Cdr Judith Graham studied Law at Northumbria University and then joined the RAF in August 1998.
She began her career at RAF Brüggen during the Kosovo Campaign and her other operational tours include: the Falkland Islands; Op SOUTHERN WATCH; Op NORTHERN WATCH; Iraq War 2003 - Op TELIC; Op HERRICK Afghanistan and Op SHADER.

Graham’s career has focussed on front-line intelligence operations supporting Fast Jet and Rotary Wing units and with the UK’s Air Component (JFACHQ). She commanded the Operations Squadron of Tactical Imagery Intelligence Wing where she managed deployments of analysts to Ops HERRICK, SHADER and TURUS as well as leading ‘CROSSBOW’, the UK element of the USAF Distributed Common Ground System.

She has broad experience in Force Protection Intelligence and Defence Counter-UAS; she co-authored the first C-UAS Tri-Service Tactical Advice Note in Oct 2017. More recently, she has served with NATO at SHAPE where she focused on Russia and International Terrorist Groups.
She took up post as the RAF’s Programme Manager for Reaper and Protector RG Mk1 in March 2019.

She lives in Suffolk with her husband and their two boys.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
