Virtual Battlespace 2 – Interactive Master Class

Attend pre conference master class & interactive workshops for a practical hands on understanding of devolopments in three-dimensional training systems, military gaming applications, human factors & air land intergration.

Interactive Pre- Conference Master Class (AM)

Virtual Battlespace 2

This enjoyable workshop will provide an overview of VBS2 capabilities, including use of the VBS2 scenario editor & after-action review system, & use of the Visitor 4 terrain tool to create geo-specific terrain areas.

VBS2  Virtual Battlespace 2 is a commercial-off-the-shelf game-based training platform, incorporating a very high-fidelity virtual environment, scenario editors, after-action review and HLA/DIS compliance. VBS2 also includes a powerful development suite that includes terrain tools (supporting rapid terrain import), a 3D modelling tool & an animation converter.

VBS2 is tailored for tactical and combined arms training & mission rehearsal, however the product has proven suitable for a wide range of virtual simulation purposes, including visualization, development of training packages, UAV training & IED defeat. The unique VBS2 simulation engine provides an extremely realistic virtual environment, with large, dynamic terrain areas, hundreds of simulated military & civilian entities and a range of generic, geo-typical terrain areas. VBS2 is used in daily training by the US Army, USMC, UK MoD, CAF and ADF. Visit http://www.vbs2.com for more information.

Benefits of Attending

This workshop is suitable for conference participants of all skill levels, from those who have never used virtual game-based training software through to those who are already familiar with VBS2. Those new to VBS2 will gain hands-on experience at using the training tool by creating a scenario and executing it in a networked environment. Participants already familiar with VBS2 will learn about some of the new features in recent releases and also practice VBS2 terrain editing. VBS2Fires, the new VBS2 Call-For-Fire capability, will also be demonstrated.

On completion of this workshop you will:
• Be aware of how VBS2 fits into the training cycle as a tactical training or mission rehearsal tool
• Have knowledge of what problems VBS2 can solve, and how it may be federated in a Joint exercise
• Know how to create and launch a basic VBS2 scenario
• Understand how to create a basic VBS2 terrain area from real-world data
• Understand how to integrate Joint Fires with VBS2 scenarios through VBS2Fires

Bohemia Interactive Company Profile

Bohemia Interactive is an independent game development company, with studios in Czech Republic and Australia, founded in 1999, that focuses on developing state of the art computer software & the research of advanced real time 3D graphics, artificial intelligence & physical simulation technologies for real-time interactive environments. Bohemia Interactive has released numerous serious games including the Virtual Battlespace series (VBS1, VBS2) & the ‘Australians In Vietnam’ military history product. Bohemia Interactive has also recently released the Aircrewman Virtual Reality Simulator (AVRS), their first hardware-based simulation system developed under contract to the Australian Defence Force. Bohemia Interactive has a proven record at delivering on time and on budget, having completed numerous development projects for government agencies around the world. BI can quickly develop models or terrain, modify the simulation engine to suit new requirements, integrate new hardware, provide training courses for VBS2 operators or administrators.

In 2006 Bohemia Interactive was selected by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to develop six Aircrewman Virtual Reality Simulators (AVRS), which combine cutting-edge simulation technology with the latest in Virtual Reality tracking and display systems. Bohemia Interactive has since delivered a system that is arguably the most successful simulation project in Australian Simulation Wing (ASW) history: an affordable turnkey solution for aircrewman training delivered both on time and budget.

About Your Workshop Leaders

Peter Morrison – CEO, Bohemia Interactive Simulations
Following graduation from the Australian Defence Force Academy (BSc Hons Computer Science) and the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Peter served in the Australian Army as a Signals Corps Officer. Peter focused on simulation, and developed a keen interest in the application of computer games for military training.

Peter departed the Army in 2005 and began work with the computer game developer Bohemia Interactive. Peter led the development of the first version of the military simulation product Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2). Peter later took over the role of Managing Director of the Australian branch of the company, and more recently became CEO of the newly formed Bohemia Interactive Simulations, based in Prague.

Dr Mark Dzuko - CTO, Bohemia Interactive Simulations
Prior to joining Bohemia Interactive in 2006, Dr Dzulko served in the German military for thirteen years, where he received his Doctorate with Summa Cum Laude in the field of plasma physics. The main part of his work in the University of Armed Forces Germany was the development of software based plasma diagnostics and simulation systems. At the rank of Captain, Dr Dzulko recognized the potential of computer game-based training systems and developed a standalone Mission After-Action Review System (MARS) for Bohemia’s Virtual Battlespace 1 (VBS1) product as well as a HLA/DIS

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
