With the Small Satellites market expected to grow into a $7.53 bn (£5.94 bn) industry by 2022, the ability to deliver connectivity here on the ground through new LEO constellations mantel is already being seriously developed by leading industry and government stakeholders worldwide.

As adoption of small, nano and cube satellites constellations has been driven by the commercial market – in particular for COMSATCOM – there is now growing consensus that architectures of military systems can and must include architecture that will support LEO solution provision.

With this in mind, SMi are delighted to announce the inaugural Small Satellites conference in London from the 27th – 28th April 2020 which will explore economies of scale, small satellite production and design, regulatory considerations in the increasingly congested domain and key programme updates from across leading space agencies, militaries and commercial solution providers. Part of SMi Group's newly launched Space Week - this conference will be held in conjunction with Military Space SSA (April 29th - 30th) to provide a holistic view of the new space environment.

    Chiara Manfletti has a dual Italian and German nationality. She holds a degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London (2001), a masters degree in "space studies" from the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg (2002) and a PhD from German University of Aachen (2010). She also holds a masters in history from the UK Open University (2013). She worked for the German Aerospace Center, DLR, as a research engineer in the field of liquid rocket propulsion and later joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2016, where she has been the Programme Advisor to the Director General at the agency's headquarters in Paris. She is now the President of the Portuguese Space Agency, Portugal Space.

    Isaac Ben-Israel was born in Israel (Tel-Aviv), 1949.
    He studied Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy at Tel-Aviv University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1988.
    He joined the Israel Air Force (IAF) after graduating high school (1967) and has served continuously up to his retirement (2002).
    During his service, Isaac Ben-Israel has held several posts in operations, intelligence and weapon development units of the IAF. He headed the IAF Operations Research Branch, Analysis and Assessment Division of IAF Intelligence, and was the Head of Military R&D of Israel Defence Forces and Ministry of Defence (1991-1997). In January 1998 he was promoted to Major General and appointed as Director of Defence R&D Directorate in IMOD. During his service he received twice the Israeli Defence Award.
    After retirement from the IDF Isaac Ben Israel joined the University of Tel-Aviv (TAU) as a professor.
     

    Dr Stuart Eves

    Stuart Eves is a satellite-system engineer. In 2018 he formed his own space consultancy company, SJE Space, after spending 14 years with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) and 16 years with the UK Ministry Of Defence. 

    During his time with the MOD, Stuart initiated the TopSat surveillance satellite programme, which established a new world record for “resolution per mass of satellite”, and for a time formed part of the space gallery at the Science Museum.

    He has recently published Space Traffic Control, a book which describes the measures needed to maintain the space environment and protect satellites from both natural hazards and man-made threats such as space debris. 

    Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in constellation design, and has been a fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society for more than 25 years. He takes an active interest in all things space, and is thus best described as an “astro-nut”!

    Mr Andrew Vick

    Andy Vick is leading a disruptive development program for space applications at RAL Space, UKRIs world-leading research, development and service facility at Harwell in Oxfordshire. He is the UK PI for QKD Qubesat, a quantum communications mission with Singapore’s Centre for Quantum technology and is providing support to the UK National Quantum Technology Programme.
    Previously Andy was based at the UK-ATC in Edinburgh where he developed instruments for the Astrophysics community and Geo-Physics research. In 2015 he commissioned a novel SWIR Spectrometer, GHOST, which flew multiple 25-hour, 18,000m flights on NASAs Global Hawks measuring greenhouse gasses.

    Christopher J. Newman, BA(Hons), PhD is Professor of Space Law and Policy at Northumbria University at Newcastle in the United Kingdom. He is active in the teaching and research of space law and has published extensively on the legal and ethical underpinnings of space governance. Christopher is a member of the International Institute of Space Law and has taken part in funded projects for the UK Space Agency on future trends in orbital regulation. He is regularly invited to lecture in universities and at specialist conferences on space law and policy across the UK and internationally.

    Mr. David Hinkley is currently a member of The Aerospace Corporation’s Small Satellite Department. He was a founding member in 1998 and in those 20 years has participated in the all aspects of satellite design for 11 missions that were composed of 22 space vehicles. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego and an M.S. in Manufacturing Engineering with emphasis in robotics from the University of California, Los Angeles. He holds 5 patents.

    Mr Gary Lay

    Graduating in 1987 with a first class honours degree in Aeromechanical System Engineering, Gary joined Logica UK as a software engineer within the Space and Defence Division. During his early career Gary worked on embedded flight software for many of ESA’s deep space missions including Cassini/Huygens, Rosetta and Beagle2. He progressed through several project management roles into business management where he was the director responsible for Health and subsequently Defence.

    Gary joined SSTL in 2013 and was appointed Director of Navigation in 2016 and Director of Exploration in 2018 where he oversaw SSTL’s design and manufacture of navigation payloads for Galileo, Europe’s satellite navigation constellation and led on the development of a Lunar telecommunications and navigation infrastructure. He was appointed Director of Strategic Opportunities in 2019.

    A member of the board of directors of companies with more than 10 years of experience in managing R&D projects.
    A Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of SatRevolution S.A. – a leading, Polish space industry company, responsible for Poland’s first commercial satellite - Swiatowid. SatRevolution is a producer of payloads and complete spacecrafts for space industry. It is focused on small, lightweight and reliable spacecrafts. The company aims to create constellation of earth observation satellites capable of imaging every place on Earth every hour – a Real-time Earth observation Constellation (REC).

    Per Lundahl Thomsen has worked more than 25 years with systems engineering, project management and business development for space. His extensive network for this particular industry extends to public entities, universities and industry. Throughout his career, he has focused on bringing science and technology together. In spite of difficult technological, economic and organizational boundary conditions, he has managed to lead large international project teams to workable and reliable solutions. Solutions that have contributed to increased knowledge, teaching and exports and increased cooperation between authorities, universities and business. Over the years, these challenges have given him a solid insight into various technological disciplines within reliable and robust electronics, materials technology, robust mechanical systems, automation, reliable embedded and higher level SW, etc.
     

    Mr Roger Hunter

    With over 40 years’ experience in US Department of Defense, Commercial, and Government Space Missions, Roger Hunter currently serves as Program Manager for NASA Small Spacecraft Technology. In this capacity for the past 5+ years, he identifies and supports the development of new subsystem technologies to expand the capabilities of small spacecraft for NASA science and exploration objectives. Previously, he served for over 6 years as the Program Manager for the NASA Kepler Mission. The Kepler Mission’s principal scientific objective has been to determine the frequency of Earth-size planets, in the habitable zone, of other stars in the Milky Way Galaxy. While working in the commercial space industry, Roger was the Program Manager for the Boeing Corporation’s Global Positioning System Sustainment activities for the the US Air Force. Roger also had a successful career in the US Air Force where he had assignments as a Program Manager for several space programs. Colonel Hunter also served as a Squadron Commander and a Deputy Operations Group Commander within the US Air Force’s 50th Space Wing. Other US Air Force tours of duty included assignments with the Headquarters US Air Force, at the Pentagon; Headquarters US Air Force Space Command, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory. He holds academic degrees from the University of Georgia, The US Air Force Institute of Technology and the US Air Force School of Advanced Airpower Studies. Roger is also a graduate of the US Air Force Air Command and Staff College and the US Air Force Air War College (C). During his career he has lectured at: numerous US universities; the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, CA; the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy; the University of Florence in Florence, Italy; Rolls Royce HQ in Derby, England; the India Institute of Technology, Guwahati India; and he’s a TEDx alumnus. His personal interests include reading, travel, tennis, running (many 10Ks, two half-marathons, two marathons, and counting), good wine, and good memes.
     

    Mr Thomas Welter

    Thomas Welter is currently Head of Regulatory Affairs and Orbit/Spectrum Resources at the Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR), the French public agency in charge of spectrum management. In his position, he is directly responsible for the satellite frequency registration of all French satellites, both governmental and commercial, as well as of the coordination of the French preparatory work for international frequency negotiations held during ITU World Radiocommunication Conferences. Thomas Welter holds diplomas in telecommunications engineering, as well as space and telecommunications law.

    Mr Tim Rush

    Tim Rush has over 35 years experience in the commercial space industry leading multinational programs and structuring / negotiating complex agreements. He provided technical leadership during the industry’s early development building, launching and operating commercial satellites. As a satellite engineer and manager for Intelsat, Comsat and Fairchild Space Company, Tim supported and managed development, procurement, construction, launch and in-orbit operation of more than 30 GEO and LEO satellites. As the industry matured and commercialized, Tim became a financial advisor / insurance broker providing risk management guidance and orchestrating placement of property and liability insurance programs for businesses that operate in space. Tim has placed over $5 Billion of launch and in-orbit coverages and successfully settled of a number of challenging claims. He has also lead satellite risk due diligence efforts for several sector mergers and acquisitions and served as insurance advisor to secured lenders and export credit agencies.

    Ms. Sachdeva joined NSR in December 2017. Prior to joining the team, she worked as the Business and Marketing strategist at Satellite Squared. During her time there, Ms. Sachdeva’s main activities included the market analysis and segmentation, identification of potential customers as well as the valuation studies for the company’s core product concepts: In-Orbit Servicing and Satellite Power Boosting.
    Ms. Sachdeva completed the Toulouse Business School’s Aerospace MBA program, and holds a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering from Monash University, Australia. During her studies, she worked on various aerospace assignments and led a research project that investigated the existence of a convergence between the internet and space industries. The study looked at the future of the telecommunication satellite constellations from the technological, economical and legal perspectives. As part of her MBA internship, Ms. Sachdeva’s work also included a comprehensive study on the funding opportunities for start-ups within the space industry, with a geographical evaluation for new space ventures.
    Prior to her transition into the space industry, Ms. Sachdeva worked as a project engineer at Ford Motor Company Australia, leading various projects and new program launch activities at different sites, globally. The experience she has gained from the automotive industry, combined with her passion for the aerospace sector has helped Ms. Sachdeva in exploiting the conceptual and technological synergies between the two domains.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SMI Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
