
This Masterclass will provide a comprehensive survey and in-depth analysis of the growing range of threats from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in military and civilian arenas, including emerging conflict areas; the latest terrorist and insurgent techniques, tactics & procedures (TTPs); attack case histories; how terrorists obtain weapons and expertise; supply chains for IEDs and improvised CBRN devices.
Sessions will focus on the principles of practices and procedures in counter-IED and EOD (explosives ordnance disposal), including:
• Equipment for EOD
• Priorities for training
• Breaking the supply chains – ‘Shoot the Archer not the Arrow’
• The role of weapons intelligence units and forensics in apprehending and convicting terrorist bomb makers
Understand the evolving range of IED threats in both civilian and military settings.
Examine the current capabilities of insurgents and learn about emerging IED technologies and terrorist tactics in various countries.
Learn about bomb disposal techniques and the devises used in first-response operations.
Analyse case study examples from IED attacks and discuss the lessons learnt in terms of policy, training, intelligence and technology with leading experts in the field of counter-IEDs.
Andy Oppenheimer AIExpE MIABTI is a UK-based analyst, author and lecturer in CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear weapons and explosives) and counterterrorism. He is Editor of Chemical, Biological & Nuclear Warfare (CBNW) and former Editor of Jane's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defence. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Explosives Engineers and a Member of the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators. His book IRA: The Bombs and the Bullets - A History of Deadly Ingenuity (Irish Academic Press, 2008) is acknowledged as the definitive title on the military campaign of the Irish republican movement and is used in EOD (explosives ordnance disposal) training in the US and UK. He is also author of the CBRN Module for the world-renowned Terrorism Studies course conducted by the University of St Andrews, and is writing the Counter-IED Module for the same course in 2013. He has written hundreds of articles for defence and security journals and gives conference and seminar presentations worldwide.
