About the workshop:

The aim of this workshop is to discuss the patent estates of a number of drug products that are delivered to patients using controlled release technologies.   The Briefing is particularly aimed at manufacturers of generic pharmaceutical and biosimilar medicines who may be targeting controlled release products for future development.   Case studies will be examined and strategies will be suggested for addressing some of the patent issues discussed.

Who should attend:

This workshop will be of interest to those involved in Generic and Biosimilar Product Development, Business Development Executives and Patent and Regulatory Specialists.

Benefits of attending - this workshop will enable you to:

  • Gain insight into the patent landscape for a number of important controlled release products
  • Understand common innovator patent filing practices and tactics
  • Develop strategies for circumventing potential patent obstacles
  • Discuss and exchange experiences with fellow professionals

 About the workshop leaders:

Dr Duncan Curley is a UK solicitor and the founder of Innovate Legal.  He obtained his PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at University College, London in 1992.  Duncan trained and qualified in the Intellectual Property department of a magic circle law firm in London, before becoming a partner in 2003 at a US law firm, where he specialised in pharmaceutical and biotech patent litigation.  He formed the boutique law practice Innovate Legal in 2007.  Duncan has acted for many companies in a series of high profile patent disputes over the years.  He now principally advises on patent issues for companies operating in the generic pharmaceuticals sector.  Duncan is the author of a special report on Supplementary Protection Certificates, published by the Intellectual Property Institute.  He is a frequent contributor to journals such as Patent World and European Intellectual Property Review and he comments regularly on patent cases for INNsight, the GenericsWeb newsletter.

About Innovate Legal:

Innovate Legal is a London-based law firm specialising in patents and intellectual property.   The firm undertakes patent clearance and freedom to operate opinions and provides consultancy services to companies wishing to develop a patent strategy.  It is noted by its clients for providing clear, realistic and cost-effective advice.

Patent Clearance Work - Innovate Legal's lawyers are highly experienced litigation and dispute resolution specialists, operating from offices close to the Law Courts in London.  If your company wishes to consider a legal claim in order to clear a patent obstacle, Innovate Legal will formulate a strategy that is aligned with your company's business goals.  Rather than operating according to rigid hourly rate billing arrangements, Innovate Legal can offer fixed fees and 'success based' billing for certain client projects.

Would your organisation be interested in running an Executive Briefing at a future SMi event?

Executive Briefings are interactive one- or half-day sessions which are attached to a specific conference and are run, on average with between 5 and 10 delegates, to explore a highly-focussed and niche aspect of the overall topic. Running an SMi workshop guarantees you one-to-one access with executives who have actively expressed a keen interest in the subject matter, giving you an excellent opportunity to promote your organisation to your target market. In addition, your company logo and promotional information appears on all SMi marketing brochures and web site. If you are interested in running an executive briefing or speaking at a conference, please contact SMi on +44 (0) 870 9090 711; client_services@smi-online.co.uk
