Building on the sell-out success of the launch event, SAE Media Group is delighted to announce the return of 3D Cell Culture, taking place on 21st and 22nd of February 2018, in London UK.

Whilst still in its infancy, 3D Cell Culture is rapidly growing with not only a widespread reach that can be seen across a number of different fields such as 3D bioprinting and microfluidics, but also with incredible potential for industrial application. The 2nd annual conference will explore these overlapping areas and will also update delegates on pioneering developments in surrounding topics such as disease models, organoids, organ-on-a-chip technologies and iPSC advances.

Chris Schofield is an investigator in the Protein and Cellular Sciences department at GlaxoSmithKline R&D, Stevenage. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Applied Biology from the University of Coventry. Joining GSK in 1995 he has gained over 20 years industrial experience in protein expression supporting small molecule drug discovery. He specialised in development of laboratory and pilot plant scale mammalian and insect cell culture systems including large scale baculovirus, bacMam and other transient systems. His cell culture expertise contributed to the development and implementation of frozen cell technology and the use of frozen isolated mitochondria from cell lines for high throughput screening. He is currently investigating the use of precision cut tissue slices and 3D cell culture models in early drug discovery.

David Pan

David obtained his PhD from the University of Sydney, Dept of Medicine (Endocrinology) and spent several years in both academic research and drug discovery in the biotech industry at OSI Pharmaceuticals/Prosidion Ltd. David is currently the Programme Manager for the UK Regenerative Medicine Platform (UKRMP). The UKRMP is a £25M initiative, funded by the MRC, EPSRC BBSRC that aims to address technical and scientific challenges associated with translating promising scientific discoveries in this area towards clinical impact. As Programme Manager, he provides the key point of contact between the regenerative medicine community and funding agencies.

After completing a Ph.D. in reproductive toxicology I post-doc’ed at Hoffmann La Roche U.S.A, studying the pharmacology of retinoid biology. I returned to the U.K. into Lead Generation at Glaxo Wellcome, developing cell-based assays and working with vendors to validate new technologies for screening. In 2000 I joined Hit Identification at AstraZeneca, developing assays for respiratory and inflammatory disease and continuing to work with vendors. In 2011 I became a founding entrepreneur of Aurelia Bioscience, a pre-clinical contract research organisation specialising in the development of cell-based assays for compound and biologics screening. Our unique selling point is the development of more physiological phenotypic assays.

Max Salick

Max Salick is a postdoctoral scholar in the Neuroscience Department of the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Max’s research has merged CRISPR gene-editing, 3D human cerebral organoid models, and high-throughput single cell trascriptomics to uncover the mechanisms of both genetic and infectious neurodevelopmental diseases. Through this combination of molecular, computational, and stem cell biology, Max’s work has helped to unlock the viral tropism of Zika virus, as well as the effects of tuberous sclerosis on brain formation and function.

Nicholas Leslie

Nick is a cancer cell biologist and a Professor at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. He studied Genetics at Cambridge and Glasgow Universities before research work at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and Dundee University, addressing cellular control mechanisms which are disturbed in many cancers. In particular, Nick has extensively studied the tumour suppressor PTEN, the function of which is disrupted in around a third of all cancers. At HWU, much of his lab’s research is in collaboration with engineers, applying biofabrication methods and other new technologies to cancer research. His 80+ publications currently accumulate >400 citations per year.

Patrick Kugelmeier

Patrick Kugelmeier studied medicine and did his medical thesis in islet transplantation for the treatment of Diabetes. The joy of research led to an MD-PhD program for the early differentiation of stem cells. Cell culture technologies at that time didn't allow for good data reproducibility, because stem cells were cultured in 2D. Fueled by the clinical need of small, size-controlled cell clusters to improve islet transplantation and the insights from the sensitivity of stem cells, he began to develop what was later to become the Sphericalplate 5D.
After the MD-PhD program, he did his clinical training in visceral and transplant surgery followed by trauma surgery. Besides the clinical work, the Sphericalplate 5D was further developed. Finally, it became clear that this technology opens a new dimension in cell transplantation and regenerative medicine and Dr. Kugelmeier decided to quit surgery to fully live this vision within a startup-company, the Kugelmeiers AG.

Since 2010 Reyk is actively involved in the development of TissUse’s Multi-Organ-Chip platform for culture analysis of drug candidates, cosmetics, chemicals and consumer products. He currently holds the position of Head of Business Development at TissUse. Prior to TissUse Reyk studied Biotechnology at the Technische Universität Berlin and specialized in Medical Biotechnology. During his academic career, he was involved in various tissue-engineering programs, all with a focus on bringing the respective products to market.

Ricardo Baptista

Ricardo Baptista hold the role of Lead Scientist of the Industrialisation Team at The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult, London, UK. He is currently working on the development of scalable bioprocesses for the manufacture of allogeneic therapies derived from human pluripotent stem cells. He is also involved in projects aiming the automation and translation of bioprocesses for cell therapy manufacture. Previously to Cell Therapy Catapult, Ricardo held the role of Project Manager and Scientist in Product and Process Development Team at CCRM-Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine, in Canada. Ricardo is a Biological Engineer and obtained his PhD degree in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering.

Stefan Przyborski

Professor Przyborski holds an academic position as Professor in Cell Technology at Durham University. He has over 25 years experience in cell biology with specific interests in cell culture technology, neuroscience and stem cell research. In recent years he has developed a multi-disciplinary approach through collaborative projects with physical scientists to develop novel ways of solving biological problems. He has formed alliances with pharmaceutical and biotech companies, has published over 100 scientific papers and has filed several patents. He is also the founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Reinnervate (now part of ReproCELL Europe), a biotechnology company founded in 2002 as a spinout from Durham University UK. Professor Przyborski is developing new and innovative ways to manage the growth and function of cultured cells. These enabling technologies have multiple applications and will be particularly relevant to building models of human tissues to advance basic research and drug discovery.

2004 - 2014 lecturer and assistant professor of Cell Biology in the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi, Romania (English French and Romanian classes), Laboratory medicine specialist. Erasmus mobility in tissue engineering (France, 2002, 2010, 2011). 2014 - 2016 - postdoc in AstraZeneca UK, implementing Human Microtissue Body-on-a-Chip microfluidic devices to enhance translation of anti-tumour drug efficacy and safety prediction to the clinic. Since 2016, second postdoc in AstraZeneca UK, responsible for development of complex 3D tumour models in microfluidic devices and their use to evaluate the therapeutic index of drug combinations.

    Electrospun scaffold material is used in regenerative medicine to grow, differentiate and deliver stem cells into patients – we have developed practical approaches to use this material for 3-D screening purposes
    Our primary cells, differentiated stem cells and recombinant cells grow on and into micro-scaffold islands, effectively 3-D micro-tissues on a matrix in micro-wells and in media
    By incorporating iron particles into the scaffold material, we can physically manipulate the micro-scaffolds with magnetism, moving these around wells of plates and tubes in culture

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
