Air Commodore Nicholas Hay

Air Commodore Nick Hay was born in Bognor Regis in 1968 and commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1988. Nick is a Tornado Ground Attack Weapons Instructor with varied operational experience in the skies over Iraq and Afghanistan, as Deputy Director Strategy Division in the Al Udeid Combined Air Operations Centre and during 2014, in command of 903 Expeditionary Air Wing and Bastion Joint Operating Base. On other flying duties, he served on the Strike Attack Operational Evaluation Unit, was the Senior Air-to-Ground Instructor at the Tactical Leadership Programme, Belgium and was privileged to command IX (Bomber) Squadron from 2008-2010. At staff, he has completed three tours in the Ministry of Defence (Equipment Capability, Plans and Military Strategic Operations Directorates) and was a fledgling member of Headquarters Joint Forces Command (HQ JFC) upon its formation in April 2012. Post his operational command tour in Bastion, Nick completed the 10-month Royal College of Defence Studies Course before returning to HQ JFC in July 2015 to fill the post of Deputy Head ISR, Cap C4ISR.
In January 2016, Nick was promoted to Air Commodore and appointed as the Head of Capability C4ISR. For the next 34 months, he executed Senior Responsible Owner duties for the Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Protector Remotely Piloted Air System, New Style of Information Technology (Deployed) and the Future Beyond Line of Sight Military Satellite Communications Programmes in addition to executing the sponsoring role for a £28Bn C4ISR portfolio (10 year costs). In October 2017, Nick graduated from the Cabinet Office-led Major Projects Leadership Academy before taking over the role of ISTAR Force Commander, Number 1 Group a year later in October 2018. In his current role, he has the honour of executing 1-star Command responsibilities for a Force comprising eight current aircraft types, the Intelligence Analysts and support personnel of Number 1 ISR Wing and planning for the introduction of at least two next-generation aircraft capabilities by 2023 (Protector, Wedgetail).
Nick is married to Carol, has three children and 2 dogs. His hobbies include: chairmanship of the IX(B) Squadron Association; dog-walking; playing golf and cricket; watching football and rugby.

CAPT Eric Soderberg is a Massachusetts native and a 1990
graduate of Lehigh University. In 1992, he earned his
commission as a Distinguished Naval Graduate of the Aviation
Officer Candidate School.
CAPT Soderberg’s first assignment was to Helicopter AntiSubmarine Squadron Eleven (HS-11) completing
Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf deployments aboard USS
America and USS George Washington.
In 1998, CAPT Soderberg entered USN Test Pilot School,
graduating in 1999. He subsequently served as Safety Officer,
Test Pilot, and SH-60F/H platform coordinator at the Rotary
Wing Aircraft Test Squadron. While there, he worked
extensively on the MH-60S test and development program,
beginning with the initial flight of the first airframe through
acceptance into Operational Evaluation.
Upon completing his test pilot tour, CAPT Soderberg became an instructor at the fleet
replacement training squadron HC-3. In 2003, CAPT Soderberg became a Department Head with
HS-8 where he served as the Safety, Operations, and Maintenance Officer. During the 2005
around the world deployment on USS Carl Vinson, he was forward deployed to Camp Arifjan
Kuwait, where, in support of OIF, he compiled nearly 100 hours of combat flight time operating
in Iraq, completing several classified missions under enemy fire. During this same deployment,
he earned his CDO underway qualification.
He also completed an IA tour to the Joint Personnel Recovery Center (JPRC) in the CENTCOM
CAOC located in Qatar.
While stationed in NS Newport, in addition to graduating from the Naval War College in 2008,
CAPT Soderberg was an associate fellow with the CNO's Strategic Studies Group XXVI.
CAPT Soderberg served as the Commanding Officer of HSC-8, the first CVW MH-60S
squadron to deploy under the Navy's Helo Master Plan. During his Naval Career, he amassed
over 4,000 flight hours in 22 different fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
CAPT Soderberg has been assigned to NAVAIR since 2011, first as the MH-60S Class Desk
followed by MH-60S IPT lead and then as the Military Director of NAVAIR’s Cyber Warfare
Detachment. CAPT Soderberg is currently assigned as the Program Manager for PMA-266.

Captain Tim Thompson graduated from Oregon State
University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in
Computer Science Engineering. He is also a graduate of
the University of Arkansas, with a Master of Science in
Operations Management and a graduate of Naval
Postgraduate School with a Master of Business
Administration and holds a Project Management
Professional certification.
His operational assignments include service with the
“Grey Knights” of VP-46, where he was twice awarded
Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN’s Crew of the
Year; catapult and arresting gear officer onboard USS J.
C. Stennis (CVN 74); department head with the “Golden
Eagles” of VP-9; and Executive and 65th Commanding
Officer of the “Fighting Marlins” of VP-40. He has accumulated over 3000 flight hours
including over 400 combat flight hours in support of operations ENDURING FREEDOM,
His shore assignments include Tactics and New Technologies Department Head with
Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN (CPRW-10); VP sea and shore detailer at
the Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS-432); program lead for Headquarters exercises, U.S.
Africa Command, J-7, Joint Training and Readiness Directorate; Military Assistant (MA) to the
Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy (Management) and Executive Assistant to the Director,
Office of Chief Management Officer (OCMO), responsible for supporting the Under Secretary of
the Navy in the performance of his duties as the Department of the Navy’s Chief Management
Before reporting as Commodore, Task Force SIX SEVEN, he completed a corporate fellowship
with Deloitte, L.L.P., as part of the academic year 2019-2020 Secretary of Defense Executive
Fellowship program.
His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious
Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 Awards), Navy Commendation Medal with Combat
Distinguishing Device (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy Achievement
Medal (5 awards), and various personal, campaign, and unit awards. He is married to the former
Amy Davis of Wenatchee, Washington. They reside with their son Gabriel and their two
Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Lucy and Piper.

Colonel Dainius GUZAS has a pilot – engineer qualification.
He finished Syzran military pilot school (Russian Federation), Captains course at Lithuanian Military Academy, Lithuania,Joint Command and General Staff and Higher Command Studies course at Baltic Defense College, Estonia.
During his military carreer he served in different positions, from platoon comander to Deputy Military Representative for Air Defence, Lithuanian Permanent Delegation to NATO and EU. Also Colonel Dainius Guzas has an experience in International operations: International mission in Multinational Corps HQ, Iraq (MNC-I)(2008) and Air Advisory Team, International Security Assistance Force, Afghanistan (2011).
His flying experience is more than 2000 h (over 100 h in combat conditions). Types flown: An-2, Mi-8T, Mi-8MTV, Mi-8MTVV-5.
Since May 2017, Colonel Dainius Guzas is the commander of Lithuanian Air Force.

Colonel Heather Fox is the Commander, 9th Reconnaissance Wing, Beale Air Force Base, CA. She is responsible for
approximately 7,000 military, civilian and contractor personnel, and the entire Air Force high-altitude reconnaissance
fleet of U-2 Dragon Lady aircraft. The 9th Reconnaissance Wing is comprised of four groups and four overseas
operating locations, executing worldwide missions in support of all six geographic combatant commanders.
Colonel Fox is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force
Academy, and started her career as a T-38 instructor
pilot before transitioning to the U-2 program as a mission
pilot. Col Fox’s staff duties have included exchange
officer service in the UK Royal Air Force Strategy
Division, the Joint Staff J3 Reconnaissance Division, and
as a strategist and speech writer for the 19th Chairman
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She has earned three
Master's Degrees from the American Public University,
King’s College London, and the National Defense
University. Her combat experience includes missions
over Iraq and Afghanistan during Operations IRAQI
commanded EQ-4, RQ-4, and U-2 combat missions for
SENTINAL, as well as Sensitive Reconnaissance
Operations in the Arabian Gulf.
Colonel Fox is a command pilot with over 2,400 hours in
the U-2, E/RQ-4, and T-38A. She has flown 69 combat
missions in the U-2 and has over 650 hours of combat
time. Prior to her current position, she was a student at
the National Defense University’s Eisenhower School for
National Security and Resource Strategy.

expertise. Between 2016 and 2021, he deployed several times with the UN mission

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.


There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.


Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SMI Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.


Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
